SLPs, Try and Give up Pattern; It’s NOT You

I used to get excited and set goals every year… only to feel disappointed and sabotage myself every year. 😣

Even when I KNEW it would make me feel better and be good for me.

  • I’d be super productive at work for 3 or 4 days and then burnout and wallow in legit overwhelm for weeks after.
  • I’d maintain ALL of my daily documentation for a week, then stop and get further and further behind.
  • I’d plan amazing therapy sessions for a week followed by weeks of feeling scattered and frenzied about what to do. Ug.

I’d start off strong, then end up right back where I started…

or actually- I’d end up worse because I made -not following through-mean:

I was a failure and a weak person. 🤦‍♀️

If you experience this (and/or you are a human being)

You might think it’s because you don’t have enough will power or discipline; or that you aren’t trying hard enough or aren’t strong enough.

WRONG

It’s NOT that. It’s NOT you.

It’s because you probably haven’t learned (and nobody teaches us this)

1) how to set functional goals for yourself

2) AND implement them with a strategic plan that OVERRIDES your (human) tendency to stop and eventually give up.

It’s funny, we set goals for our clients all the time. …and we support our clients in getting there. That’s what we do. Think, scaffolding, prompt levels, prompt fading, complexity levels, rapport building…

we design for them and base their next steps on their progress during each session. (yes- we are badasses)

But we don’t give ourselves the gift of specific, focused support in the areas WE want to improve.

I am the biggest DIY (stubborn and resistant) person out there.

We think we should be able to figure it all out on our own.

But that’s really hard

and sometimes, literally. impossible.

I love the metaphor: A fish knows exactly nothing about water. It has no awareness of the actual environment it’s living in. There’s no way a fish can get a bird’s eye view.

You can’t make a plan for yourself if you aren’t able to see the whole picture. Human brains tend to get stuck in the minutia of the day to day. It CANNOT see the problem or a workable solution.

That’s why our clients need us.

If you want to eliminate

  • the start and stop pattern
  • the unintended self sabotage
  • the incessant energy drain

Get support in anyway you can.

I teach smart SLP’s how to create solutions AND follow through consistently in a way that feels easy and calm.

What are you waiting for? I ask that question genuinely, with curiosity. Notice what comes up? Do you like your reasons?

What if there are solutions you aren’t considering? What if you could reach your goals and

Feel. Amazing.

You can. 🎯💥

Sending so much love and excitement for 2020,

Angie
